Thirty years ago, The Black Crowes, led by brothers Chris and Rich Robinson, released their debut album Shake Your Money Maker. At a time when journalists were mourning the death of rock as cheesy pop and hair metal dominated the charts, The Black Crowes emerged from Atlanta to resuscitate it. The authentically gritty blues-rock album, whose title is an homage to blues legend Elmore James, went double platinum in its first year. Needless to say, in a pre-social media, pre-smart phone world, the quick rise to stardom coupled with attitude led to complete chaos.

Tonight was our chance to relive this album in its entirety and didn’t disappoint at all.

After having a last minute venue change due to Melbourne’s ‘varied’ weather conditions, punters packed the newly restored Palais Theatre with much anticipation.

Crowd warmers were Full Flower Moon Band and much loved icons You Am I, who meandered through a set list of new tunes and their greatest hits.

The Black Crowes haven’t graced our shores for many years, which was evident in the large turnout. Proceeding to blast their way through Shake Your Money Maker, which left us all completely satisfied, they then moved through various hits from their albums The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, Amorica and By Your Side.

So incredibly great to have touring acts back in our country and this show was a definite benchmark set high for any other international acts coming our way.
