Melbourne's metal contingent converged on the Forum on this mild Friday summer night to kick off the weekend at Soulfly, Nailbomb and Snot's Froth & Fury sideshow.
Snot came out of the gate swinging and grooving with their unique nu metal/hardcore/funk hybrid style. Huge vibes and a great connection between the band and the already almost full venue. Every part of this band was firing on all cylinders and vocalist Andy Knapp was especially captivating, engaging the crowd at every turn and feeding off that energy to turn things up to 11.
Nailbomb took the stage next and the room filled with a loving mix of excitement and dread. Their sole album, the soundtrack to an apocalypse, recorded just over 3 decades ago, never felt so relevant. Eerie samples, machine-like drumming, industrial tinged guitars, thunderous bass and, of course, Max Cavalera's gritty and punishing vocals, all pooled together unrelentingly for this once in a lifetime opportunity no one expected. Truly special.
t was now time for the final act and Soulfly did it in fine fashion, setting the tone with the chuggy double whammy of intro track Indigenous Inquisition and Storm The Gates.
The set hit all sides of the Soulfly repertoire, from tribal groove, to thrashy, to bouncy, and everything in between that makes this band so unique and fun. Max Cavalera is an absolute master of crowd control and made sure everyone was involved and having the best time.
Classics such as No Hope = No Fear, Seek 'N' Strike fit in nicely amongst newer tracks Chama and No Pain = No Power, rounding things out with a monstrous encore of Jumpdafuckup and Eye For An Eye.
An amazing night all round, full of heavy music, big riffs and 'fuck yeah' energy!
