The 2026 Adelaide Festival launched on Friday night with a huge free show from Britpop legends Pulp. As the park filled, it was clear everyone was in the mood for a party. By sunset, the dancing had begun — led by frontman Jarvis Cocker, pulling his trademark shapes while singing about 20,000 people standing in a field during Sorted for E’s & Wizz.

The setlist left little room for disappointment. Disco 2000 had the crowd singing every word, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. brought a rush of energy, and This Is Hardcore built to an impressive climax. Mis-Shapes still struck a chord, even if time has shifted its meaning slightly.

After joking that they’d played all the hits, the opening synth of Common People sent the night to its peak before the band gently closed with A Sunset. A wonderful way to open the festival — and a night that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
