Last night saw the return of one of the formative influences on alternative rock, Dinosaur Jr, playing live at the Northcote Theatre and the first time back in Melbourne since 2017.

Celebrating 30 years of “Where You Been” saw the three-piece play the iconic album from start to finish, which included crowd favourites “Start Chopping” and “Get Me” with a glorious sonic assault that hits you hard and reminds you that this band has not slowed down a iota.

J Mascis, surrounded by multiple Marshall stacks, sang and played as if it was 1993, solidly flanked by one very energetic Lou Barlow on Bass and metronome-like Murph on drums.

In addition to the the ten tracks of “Where You Been”, punters were treated to a fine selection of tracks from the Dinosaur Jr back catalogue including “Feel The Pain” from “Without A Sound”, “Freak Scene” from” Bug” and “Little Fury Things” from “You’re Living All Over Me”, with Mascis and Barlow swapping guitar and vocal duties from some tracks.

May the next tour return soon.
